The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is one of the most critically acclaimed fan-favorite titles in the series. Originally released for the Super Nintendo in the early 1990’s, the game has since been re-released on the Gameboy Advance and the Nintendo Wii. One crucial aspect of the game which contributes to success and progression in the game is the ability to upgrade items. One of the main items which could be upgraded was the shield. For those looking to upgrade their shield, this article will serve as a guide to help you do so.
The first shield upgrade
The first shield upgrade turns your blue and whit shield into a larger red and white one. This shield allows you to protect against fire which is a projectile attack that many enemies will use against you in dungeons and on land. Players will find themselves able to defend against zora enemies and the annoying stationary guards in dungeons and temples. The first shield upgrade can be found easily. Simply head north of the Witch’s Hut and use the zora’s flippers to swim into the large waterfall ahead of you. Throw in your shield and the fairy will upgrade it for free. Alternatively, you can purchase it from a store in Kakariko or by the Witch’s Hut when you first progress to the Dark World for 500 rupees.
The second shield upgrade
The second shield upgrade comes from the final crystal dungeon in the game, Turtle Rock. As you progress throughout the tedious dungeon, you will eventually come across the necessary item , “Big Key”. The Big Key not only gives you access to the dungeon boss on the way to rescuing Princess Zelda, but it also gives you access to the master chest which will contain the final shield in the game which is the largest and most powerful. Be sure to find the big key and the big chest and open it for the final shield before heading into the boss room and especially before fighting Ganon in the Pyramid.

They can make dungeons so much easier by allowing you to defend against tedious attacks and as a result, they can also make your heart meter last much longer thus allowing you to master any dungeon you come across.
